“I always like working with and meeting candidates who have somehow managed to get into a job or company that they really enjoy, or even love.  Here’s a great story about one of our candidates who was able to capture and get into his dream job, even though our client rejected him at first!”

How A Rejected Candidate Ended Up Capturing His Dream Job

Imagine that you’re a huge basketball fan.  I mean huge!  You read everything about the sport and follow the NBA and CBA like there’s no tomorrow.  You even have your own public WeChat account, where you share your thoughts and analysis on what’s going on in the world of basketball.

Then imagine showing up to your very first day of your dream job, working for one of the most recognized companies in the sports industry.  You’re walking down the hallway and who do you see coming straight at you?  It’s Yao Ming!  As a diehard basketball fan, it doesn’t get any better than that!

This is the story that one of our candidates shared with us recently when we followed up with him to see how he was doing in his new job as a Digital Marketing Manager with our client.  To be honest though, his getting hired by this company and having his surreal encounter with Yao Ming was far from something that was meant to be.  In fact, at one point, it looked more likely that it wasn’t going to happen.  But to his credit, he grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat to capture this opportunity.

Good But Not Good Enough

Our candidate had a decent education background and several years of solid work experience with two local companies.  Our client, however, had specific requirements for a person from a multinational company, since in this Digital Marketing Manager would be communicating frequently with overseas parties and had to have marketing sensibilities that were in line with them.

Even though Tony had never worked for a multinational before,  I submitted him anyway because he was the strongest candidate I had come across, even better than the ones I spoke with from multinational companies,” recalled our Search Consultant.  “He had a great grasp of digital marketing and knew what he wanted.  And most noticeably, he was passionate about our client’s business and products.”

Still, our submission of Tony’s profile was originally rejected.  Our Consultant had to convince the hiring manager just to meet him, which he eventually did.  However, while Tony made a good impression in his interview, the hiring manager felt that his strategic planning experience to handle the position wasn’t enough.  We were asked to introduce more candidates for comparison, which is usually another way of telling us, “We like your candidate, but find us a better one.”

We told Tony he was being put on hold, and we continued our search for other candidates.

Getting Back In The Game!

About three weeks later, we received a call from our client that they wanted to arrange additional interviews with Tony.  We were quite surprised to suddenly see things move forward again.  When we asked the hiring manager for his current thoughts on Tony, he told us that Tony had sent him a ppt presentation of a marketing promotion plan for a new APP product the company was planning to launch and that was shown to him during his interview.  The hiring manager was impressed by both Tony’s initiative and the quality of his online marketing and promotion ideas.

Tony continued to impress through the rest of the interview process.  Another three weeks later, he received and accepted our clients offer.

Don’t Give Up So Easily On Your Dream

Afterwards, I asked Tony what gave him the idea to put together and send our client the ppt presentation, since he had no real indication that the hiring manager was interested in him.

“Well, I’ve been a hardcore basketball fan since I was 10 years old,” he began.  “And I’ve always wanted to somehow work in a company where my job involved doing things related to basketball every day.  Here was that opportunity.  There was no way I was going to give up easily on my dream job.

“While they didn’t say that they wanted to hire me, they didn’t exactly say that they didn’t want to hire me either.  So as far as I was concerned, the door is still open.  And then as a super-fan, I also felt like I really understood their products and how to market them to their customers.  So why not try?  What could I lose?”

There’s Always Something You Can Do

When I asked Tony what lessons he’d pass on to others about getting a job you really want, he said, “The first thing you need to do is find out what’s important to the potential employer and what they’re trying to do. Then, you need to show your passion and understanding of their product and business, and just do something to demonstrate your capabilities and quality of work related to their position.

“In my case, I wasn’t sure how much the hiring manager would like the ppt presentation I sent her, but I was pretty sure she’d at least look at it.  Even if she didn’t like it, I wanted to give myself a chance to show her what I could do.  Fortunately, she did!”

Key Takeaways From This Article

If you really want to impress an employer or get a job that you really want, then . . .

1) Be proactive and don't just wait for an employer to recognize what you can do

2) Show your passion and understanding of the company's business and product(s)

3) Do something that demonstrates your capabilities, quality of work, and ability to perform in their position.
