On Features of Journalistic English and Its Translation

新聞是最新事實(shí)的報(bào)道。它在大眾傳媒中扮演著一個(gè)很重要的角色，即吸引觀眾的注意并向之傳送正在發(fā)生的事件的信息。從語言上說，新聞?dòng)⒄Z文體屬于普通英語，即標(biāo)準(zhǔn)英語的主體層，但是它的詞匯、標(biāo)題和概括性導(dǎo)語又具有特別鮮明的特點(diǎn)，即新穎、生動(dòng)、緊湊。 人們使用語言，總有一定的目的，總想產(chǎn)生一定的效果，這就是語言的功能。在翻譯的過程中，譯者應(yīng)力求使譯語產(chǎn)生與原語相等的效果，具有使之對(duì)等的功能。具體說來，新聞?dòng)⒄Z的功能主要在于傳遞信息，其次在于吸引讀者，即新聞?dòng)⒄Z的主要功能是信息功能，其次為說服功能。為此，對(duì)于其中新穎的詞匯、生動(dòng)的標(biāo)題和緊湊的概括性導(dǎo)語，必須特別注意如實(shí)地再現(xiàn)，才能使譯文做到與原文功能對(duì)等。 本文是從原語的功能出發(fā)，分析原語的三個(gè)方面的語言特點(diǎn)是如何實(shí)現(xiàn)新聞的信息功能和說服功能的；以功能對(duì)等為原則指導(dǎo)翻譯，以大量的例子具體分析這三個(gè)方面各自的翻譯方法和步驟。 全文分為五個(gè)部分，引言部分概括介紹了新聞的定義，分類以及功能。 第一章分析了新聞?dòng)⒄Z詞匯的特點(diǎn)是新穎，提出翻譯時(shí)應(yīng)遵循忠實(shí)與可接受性的原則，從文化相同和文化相異兩個(gè)方面具體研究如何翻譯新聞?dòng)⒄Z詞匯。 第二章闡述了標(biāo)題的語言特點(diǎn)是生動(dòng)，具體表現(xiàn)為三個(gè)方面：簡(jiǎn)潔、時(shí)態(tài)的特殊性和修辭的廣泛使用。在翻譯標(biāo)題時(shí)必須遵循忠實(shí)與引發(fā)興趣的原則。在具體的過程中，由于標(biāo)題有時(shí)過于簡(jiǎn)潔或因?yàn)闀r(shí)態(tài)的特殊性，難免會(huì)給翻譯帶來困難，因此，標(biāo)題翻譯分為兩個(gè)步驟，一是消除歧義，二是重現(xiàn)生動(dòng)這一特點(diǎn)。 第三章主要分析了概括性導(dǎo)語的特點(diǎn)是緊湊，這同英語語言形合的特點(diǎn)是統(tǒng)一的，文章從英漢對(duì)比的角度，分析了原語的形合特點(diǎn)和譯語的意合特點(diǎn)，指出翻譯時(shí)必須遵循忠實(shí)與可理解的原則，翻譯的步驟首先是劃分意群，其次是重構(gòu)。由于重構(gòu)這一步驟形式多樣，本章特辟專節(jié)對(duì)重構(gòu)的方法進(jìn)行詳細(xì)討論。最后一部分總結(jié)全文，指出新聞?dòng)⒄Z翻譯的意義和對(duì)新聞翻譯者的特殊要求。
News as journalism is a genre of publicizing latest events. "It informs us of what is going on in the world at large. In the media it is an important commodity as well as a way of attracting audience keen to be informed of the events taking place in the world in which they live." (Rayner,2001:215)Roughly speaking, journalistic English or news English belongs to general English, i.e., the main part of Standard English, (cf. Liu Miqing, 1998: 1) The language used in journalistic English fulfills the informative function and the persuasive function with the former as the primary and the latter as the secondary. These two functions are typically reflected in three aspects: journalistic neologisms, headlines and summary leads. In short, this paper discusses the translation of journalistic English in these three aspects.The paper is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction, which gives a brief introduction of the definition and the classification of news, and points out that journalistic English belongs to general English. The guiding principle of the translation of journalistic English is faithfulness and functional equivalence.Chapter One analyzes the feature of novelty of journalistic neologisms in two aspects: sources and formations. Journalistic neologisms are the most active carriers of new cultural contents. Therefore, how to deal with cultural similarities and cultural differences in translating neologisms are discussed fully and clearly. Owing to cultural factors, the translator should follow the principles of faithfulness and acceptability in translating journalistic neologisms.In Chapter Two, we note that vividness, the feature of headlines is reflected in three aspects. When translating headlines, we should follow the principles of faithfulness and interest-arousing. The translation procedures of eliminating ambiguities and reproducing vividness arediscussed in detail.Chapter Three is about the translation of summary leads. Although there are two basic kinds of leads, the summary lead is much more worth studying in terms of translation, since it is the most widely used lead and typically reflects the feature of compactness in journalistic language. The feature of compactness is analyzed through the comparison between hypotaxis in English and parataxis in Chinese. We should follow the principles of faithfulness and intelligibility in translating summary leads. The procedures are firstly division and secondly reconstruction. Since the procedure of reconstruction is complicated, it is paid much more attention.The conclusion gives a brief summary of the whole thesis. The importance and the particularity of the translation of journalistic English are pointed out, and hence specific requirements are suggested for the translator of journalistic English.
