Back in May, I posted an article about YouSendIt, a free e-mail-based file sending service. If you’ve ever had to send large files and don’t have access to FTP, or the person you’re sending to doesn’t, this type of service is a fantastic resource.
Today, I have a list of 50 similar services that are absolutely free and require no e-mail registration to use. Included in the list are file size limits, download limits and the amount of time the file remains on the server for download.

Go to hostingrapid.com to get 100 MB of free space,3GIG of bandwidth,attachments of documents,zips and other. For sure, you can’t attach .exe but to bypass it, attach it to Winzip 10. You also get a subdomain and password protected sites (.htacl), mysql,php,ftp

What this list largely lacks is information about where the servers are located. It would not be wise to send a big file to a US server if I live in Europe and want to share it with another European. So a “country” field would be much appreciated. Even if some locations can be figured from the URLs, it’s the .com ones are ambiguous.

What would also be useful is to list another download limit: the user interface. Does the download require only a click, like YouSendIt, or do you have to click a “no thanks” to subscribe, wait 60 seconds, and/or find the download link hidden on a page full of ads? The latter refers to sites like RapidShare.de, MegaUpload, and I’m sure several others in this list who do not seem very interested in making files available..

Can anyone recommend open-source software that one can install to get similar functionality on my own server? PHP, cgi, rails apps are all acceptable… this seems to be the kind of thing that defies being googled for, since it turns up lots of lists like this for other *services* like yousendit, but not software.
I, and i’m sure others, need to run this on my own server for corporate policy reasons of security and file retention, as well as logging.

You do have to register, but that is only for a username and password. But it is free, and the do not spam ur email as far as i know, and i have been using them for 6 months now. You only have two limitations:
1. File size cannot be bigger than 1gig… lol
2. No direct links, it takes you to a download page were u select one of there many servers… again… lol
Upside
1. Free subdomain (changeable too) All of your uploaded files are listed
2. Unlimited bandwidth
3. Files never get deleted
4. Registration is not required to download files

What a list! My company, Know More Media, could certainly benefit from an easy and free way to swap large files like employee training videos … and it’s good to know that there are literally dozens of alternatives out there already. Thanks for compiling all this!
