SQL, or Structured QueryLanguage, is the de facto language of choice for most relationaldatabases, including Oracle. As an Oracle database administrator,you'll find that virtually every action you perform on thedatabase is accomplished by issuing a SQL command. This chapterprovides a quick reference to the commands you will use most often asyou administer an Oracle database.

13.1. SQL Commands by Task

One of the most frustrating andtime-consuming aspects of database administration, particularly forthe novice DBA, is finding the proper command to accomplish aparticular task. In Table 13.1, we have listed mostcommon database administration tasks along with the SQL commands usedto accomplish these tasks. The detailed syntax of each command islisted later in this chapter.
