A man in his 40s, who had an affair with four women and fathered five children with them, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for bigamy.
The man Zhao Chunming, 48, married for the first time in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, in 2003. They had a daughter a year later.
In 2005, Zhao got into another relationship with a woman and managed to get a marriage certificate from Pudong New Area registration center without divorcing his first wife.
Both women were not aware of Zhao's marital status.
Shanghai's civil affairs authorities could not access the real-time marriage registration information of Zhao in other cities. Zhao also had a daughter with the second woman in 2007.
But in late 2007, Zhao met another woman surnamed Zhong in Beijing and they lived together since then. They had a son and a daughter in 2008 and 2011, respectively.
In 2009, Zhao lived with a fourth woman surnamed Qi. After they had a daughter, Zhao hosted a wedding ceremony with her in Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province, in October 2010.
The two relationships were common law marriages without registration.
Zhao was arrested by police last year. He told police he did not live with the four women at the same time together.
"I contacted my first wife only a few times on phone, and Qi worked at my company, while I met Zhong at bars and she said she wanted a baby," Zhao told police.
