Cases:
Among the Papago of the American Southwest there were"nights of saturnalia,"in which homosexual tendencies could be expressed. The Papago also had many transvestites, who wore women's clothing, did women's chores, and, if not married, could be visited by men.
The Siwans of North Africa expect all males to engage in homosexual relations. In fact, fathers make arrangements for their unmarried sons to be given to an older man in a homosexual arrangement. Siwan custom limits a man to one boy. Fear of the government has made this a secret matter, but before 1909 such arrangements were made OPENLY. Almost all men were reported to have engaged in a homosexual relationship as boys; later, when they were between sixteen and twenty, they married girls.
Among the most prohomosexual societies are the Etoro of New Guinea, who prefer homosexuality to heterosexuality. Heterosexuality is prohibited as many as 260 days a year and is forbidden in or near the house and gardens. Homosexuality, on the other hand, is not prohibited at any time and is believed to make crops flourish and boys become strong.
Temporary homosexual marriages did occur among the Azande of Africa. Before the British took control over what is known as the Sudan, Azande warriors who could not afford wives often married"boy-wives"to satisfy their sexual needs. As in normal marriages, gifts were given by the"husband"to the parents of his boy-wife. The husband performed services for the boy's parents and could sue any other lover in court for adultery. The boy-wives not only had sexual relations with their husbands but also performed many of the chores female wives traditionally performed for their husbands.
Among the Lepcha of the Himalayas, a man is believed to become homosexual if he eats the flesh of an uncasterated pig.
