(August 15, 2019)
講座時(shí)間(Time):晚上19:00至21:00(19:00 p.m.to 21:00 p.m.)
(The Development of the Mogao Grottoes and the Underlying Dynamics of Their Design and Function.)
This talk will examine the development of the Mogao Grottoes in Chinese history and try to answer such interesting questions as how did the patrons who constructed the grottoes conceptualize them in terms of design and function, why did their basic beliefs and suppositions transform, and what were the results of this transformation in later periods? Initially informed by the influences from South and Central Asia, the Mogao Grottoes became increasingly sinified. We will also discuss what “sinification” means and how Buddhism progressively addresses the concerns of Chinese lay patrons, which come to redefine the very nature and design of these grottoes.
