FORTUNE -- Google's (GOOG) Android was the clear winner in mobile phone sales over the past 12 months. According to Gartner, Android's worldwide market share in the first quarter of 2012 was 56%, double the iPhone's 23%.
But Apple's (AAPL) iPad dominates tablet sales, and iOS users in general are far more likely than Android owners to use their mobile devices as portals to the Internet
The evidence? The chart at right, generated from data posted Friday by NetMobileShare. Measuring hits on their clients' Web pages over the past 12 months (representing about 160 million visitors per month), it shows the share from iOS devices -- both iPhones and iPads -- rising nearly 20%, to 62.% in May 2012 from 52.4% in June 2011.
In the same period, Android's share rose to 19.7% from 14.3%. That's larger percentage gain -- nearly 38% -- but considerably less than you might expect given the growth in Android sales.
