Located in the northwestern part of Hubei province in central China, the Wudang Mountains are one of the “Four Sacred Taoist Mountains” in Chinese history and home to a famous Taoist temple associated with the God Xuanwu. It is a must-visit destination for Taoist pilgrimages.

For centuries, the Wudang Mountains have been known as the Mecca of Taoism. Not unlike how the Shaolin Monastery is associated with Zen Buddhism and martial arts, the Wudang Mountains are renowned for the practice of tai chi, which is the Taoist form of martial arts.

The first site of worship – the Five Dragons Temple – was constructed at the behest of Emperor Taizong of the Tang dynasty in mid 7th century. Further structures were added during the Song and Yuan dynasties between the 10th and14th centuries, with the largest complex being built on the mountain in theearly 15th century by Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty. The oldest existing structures are the Golden Hall and the Ancient Bronze Shrine, both of which were constructed in 1307.

There was a saying that the Forbidden City in north and the Wudang Mountains in south. 7 years after the Forbidden City became the World Heritage Site, in 1994 the Wudang Mountains were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
