It isn’t necessary to shout
Mr. Clark had a shop in the busy street of a town. The shop sold, cleaned and repaired hearing-aids (助聽器). One day an old man came into the shop and put a hearing aid down in front of Mr. Clark without saying anything.
“What’s the matter with it?” Mr. Clark asked. The man did not answer. Of course Mr. Clark thought the man must be deaf and something must be wrong with his hearing aid.
“What’s wrong with it, sir?” Mr. Clark asked again. But the man still said nothing, so Mr. Clark shouted his question again as loudly as he could.
The man then took out a pen and a piece of paper and wrote: “It isn’t necessary to shout when you are speaking to me. My ears are as good as yours. This hearing aid is my wife’s, not mine. I’ve had a throat (喉嚨) operation the day before yesterday. I can hear very well, but I can’t speak!”
