金陵與康乃爾同用一首校歌
金陵中學(xué)前身為1888年由美國美以美（methodism）會創(chuàng)建的匯文書院。匯文書院是南京的第一所高等學(xué)府，英文名為NankingUniversity。1910年匯文書院與益智書院、基督書院合并，創(chuàng)建金陵大學(xué)。匯文書院的中學(xué)部博學(xué)館，遂更名為金陵大學(xué)附屬中學(xué)。
民國時期，金陵中學(xué)始終與金陵大學(xué)保持密切關(guān)系，乃至于共同使用一首校歌。這首歌名為"Annable Lee"，為19世紀(jì)美國詩人H. S.Thompson創(chuàng)作，不久為康奈爾大學(xué)用為校歌。1930年代，金陵大學(xué)也采用這首歌曲為校歌，并由國學(xué)大師胡小石作詞。這首歌曲，不僅旋律簡潔而不失端莊氣勢，又有大師填詞，可謂氣勢不凡。1988年南京十中恢復(fù)校名和校歌，其中第三句歌詞改作：鐘樓嵯峨，教育之宮，桃李坐春風(fēng)。雖更切合金陵中學(xué)實際，但畢竟不是大師原作了。胡先生所以言“三院嵯峨，藝術(shù)之宮，文理與林農(nóng)”，是因為金大由文理農(nóng)三院組成，而林農(nóng)學(xué)科尤為突出，后來的南京農(nóng)業(yè)大學(xué)、林業(yè)大學(xué)都源自金大。國內(nèi)生物和農(nóng)林學(xué)界的開創(chuàng)性學(xué)者，很多都是金陵中學(xué)和金陵大學(xué)的校友。故而，胡先生文理與林農(nóng)自有其道理。
在1949年以前，金陵中學(xué)的小禮堂，曾經(jīng)是每周都要進行禮拜唱詩的禮拜堂，學(xué)校慶典也在此齊唱校歌。圖書館則稱作琥珀廳，曾經(jīng)是青年會和金大圖書館的所在地。這洋溢著貴族氣息的校歌，只有與鐘樓的鐘聲、小禮堂的鋼琴，圖書館與東課樓的紅屋頂相伴，才顯得它歷史的滄桑和氣質(zhì)的高貴。

這個英文版本明顯有康奈爾大學(xué)校歌的影子，康奈爾的校歌歌詞為：

康奈爾大學(xué)對此歌的來歷作了如下紀(jì)錄：
The lyrics to Cornell‘s Alma Mater were written by Archibald C. Weeks ‘72and his roommate, Wilmot M. Smith ‘74 to the tune of ‘Annie Lisle,‘ a balladof the period recounting the gradual decline and death of the tuberculous heroine.(‘Wave, willows; murmur, waters; Golden sunbeams, smile; Earthly music cannotwaken Lovely Annie Lisle.‘) Although the Alma Mater actually consists of sixverses, in keeping up with the increasing pace of the world, it is usuallyabreviated to only the first two. The Alma Mater is played by the Big Red Bandat all Cornell football games.
巧合的是東吳大學(xué)與金陵大學(xué)校歌均選用了美國民謠"Annie Lisle"。金陵大學(xué)的檔案并沒有顯示這支歌曲的來歷，倒是臺灣東吳大學(xué)記載了它的來歷。
臺灣東吳大學(xué)如此記述這首校歌：本校校歌之樂曲源至一首美國民謠"Annie Lisle", 由一位住在美國波士頓麻薩諸塞州名叫H. S. Thompson的詩人音樂家于1857年所寫，描寫一位年輕貞潔的婦人的命運。而"Annie Lisle"是一首類似于Edgar Allan Poe 的 "Annable Lee" 和 "Lenore" 的歌。當(dāng)時，報紙社論也曾評論"AnnieLisle"和一首相近的"swept the country like a prairie fire"。而"Annie Lisle"經(jīng)譜曲后，大受美國各大專院校的喜愛，連康乃爾大學(xué)至今亦用此曲作為校歌。
從金陵大學(xué)校史我知道了詞作者為胡小石，從東吳大學(xué)校史我知道了旋律的來歷。最后從康奈爾大學(xué)的網(wǎng)站上聽到了這首歌曲的合唱和交響樂版本。那種磅礴氣勢，決非我們用鋼琴伴奏所能演繹出來的。前后一年多，我們終于知道了這首為數(shù)萬校友懷念和感動的校歌完整的故事。
