“You’re too small, Ginny, and you’ll never make an Olympicteam,” claimed my first-ever rowing coach in the late winter of1978. I had just taken an extremely large risk being here, as Istood in the basement of Yale’s Payne Whitney Gymnasium. I hadconfessed (坦白) my dream, which was admittedly outsize at thatpoint, to somebody whose opinion not only mattered, but whoseemotional support could play an important role. However, the easyroad did not lie ahead for me.

Defeated not just by his choice of words, but by his certainty,I left the gym in a panic, forcing my tears back, rushing out intothe cold winter weather to find comfort in the loneliness of myoff-campus apartment.

As I walked, I began to reassess my future, making room for mycoach’s opinion. But just because my own coach didn’t have faith inme, or just because I’d heard a forceful “no” instead of even auseless “yes”, it didn’t mean I had to give up on myself soquickly. When I arrived at my apartment, I was annoyed with mycoach and my dream was back on the center stage.

To achieve my goal, I struggled hard every day. Eventually, Imade that 1980 team, despite our not beginning to compete at theOlympics. All the effort was worth the wait. And the lesson—not togive up on myself too soon and not to allow someone else’s opinionto destroy my desire—has stood me in good stead since those years.Everything I have today is a result of sticking to that dream, allthose hours on the water, in the weight room, and in thestadium—they got me here, where I know now that big aspirationsneed not just time to develop, but a firm belief in them. If I’mnot going to be my own champion for my dreams, no one else will. And I will not allow anyone else to decide for me what’spossible.

24. What did the author think was “an extremely large risk”?

A. Her bad health condition. B. Being too small.

C. Her coach’s objection. D. Being a rowing player.

25. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?

A. The author’s coach was not responsible.

B. The author was a student of Yale University.

C. The author’s coach felt uncertain about the author’sdisadvantages.

D. The author felt extremely sad after hearing her coach’swords.

26. What kind of person is the author?

A. Hard-working and brave.

B. Ambitious and proud.

C. Shameful and unconfident.

D. Hopeful and clever.

27. What can we learn from the author’s experience?

A. Believe yourself no matter what others say.

B. Listening to other’s opinions is good for your success.

C. It is important to maintain a good relationship with yourcoach.

D. It is impossible for us to have no weakness.

Love to sink into your chairs and relax when you get to school? Then you will not be happy to hear that schools all over the worldare seriously considering exchanging traditional desks for oneswith no seats at all-Yes, that means you will be encouraged tostand through those already too long math and science lessons! Whywould anyone even think of putting kids to such cruelty? Expertssay it improves their health and helps fight obesity. While thatmay seem a little far-fetched (牽強(qiáng)的), the officials at the fewschools around the world seem to agree.

Among them are educators from the College Station IndependentSchool District in Texas, who recently completed a week-longexperiment involving 480 students across three elementary schools. The 374 kids that agreed to participate in the study were provideda device that helped record step count and calorie consumption overthe entire period.

All 25 teachers involved in the study reported that studentsappeared to be more alert and concentrate better, when allowed tostand. The one thing that did surprise the researchers was thatyounger kids were more willing to stay standing than kids in highergrades. They believe this may have something to do with the factthat after years of being asked to “sit still”, older kids have aharder time adjusting to this unexpected freedom.

American schools are not the only ones reporting success withstand-up desks. Four Catholic schools in Perth, Australia, whichhave been testing them since October 2013, have seen similarresults. In May 2014, Grove House Primary School in Bradford, WestYorkshire, became Europe’s first test one, with a seven-week trialthat involved the use of desks made by Ergotron in theirfifth-grade classrooms. While official results are not out yet, early reactions from both teachers and students, have beenextremely encouraging.

The findings of these studies and others done previously, allseem to mean that allowing kids to move around in classrooms is awin-win for students and teachers—it helps kids get healthier andprovides educators with a more engaged audience.

28. According to the first paragraph, what may make the studentsat school unhappy is that .

A. they have to exchange desks with each other

B. they have to exchange traditional desks for ones with noseats

C. there are no seats for them to sit in class

D. the officials show no sympathy to them at all

29. According to the teachers, older students may not likestand-up desks because .

A. they are cleverer than younger students

B. they are easily tired of standing long

C. they have formed the habit of sitting

D. they do badly in class while standing

30. What is most likely to be the result of the seven-weektrial?

A. The standing desks can’t be used at all.

B. It is good for students to use stand-up desks.

C. More tests should be done in other schools.

D. The students are different in personality.

31. Why do the teachers like the standing desks?

A. Because the educators can draw the students’ attention.

B. Because the teachers can keep the students healthy.

C. Because the students can have a walk in the classroom.

D. Because the standing desks can keep the studentsconcentrated.

More than four decades ago British scientist Robert Edwardsfirst witnessed the miracle of human life growing inside a testtube at his Cambridge lab. Since that ground-breaking moment, morethan four million babies have been born through IVF and in 2010 hisgreat contribution to science was finally recognized as he wasawarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine.

The prize for Dr Edwards, who was given a Daily Mirror Pride ofBritain Award in 2008, includes a £900,000 cheque. The NobelAssembly described IVF as a “milestone in modern medicine”.

With the help of fellow scientist Patrick Steptoe, theManchester-born physiologist developed IVF—leading to the birth ofthe world’s first test tube baby. Dr Steptoe died 10 years laterbut their work has transformed fertility treatment and given hopeto millions of couples.

It was a scientific breakthrough that transformed the lives ofmillions of couples. They said: “His achievements have made itpossible to treat infertility, a disease which makes human unableto have a baby. This condition has been afflicting a largepercentage of mankind including more than 10% of all couplesworldwide.”

Louise Brown, the world’s first test tube baby, madeinternational headlines when she was born in Oldham, GtrManchester, in 1978 to parents Lesley and John who had beenfruitlessly trying for a baby since 1969.

IVF—in vitro fertilisation—is the process whereby egg cells arefertilized outside the body before being implanted in the womb. After a cycle of IVF, the probability of a couple with infertilityproblems having a baby is one in five—the same as healthy coupleswho conceive naturally.

Professor Edwards, who has five daughters and elevengrandchildren, began his research at Cambridge University in 1963,after receiving his PhD in 1955. He once said: “The most importantthing in life is having a child. Nothing is more special than achild.” With the help of fellow scientist Patrick Steptoe, Prof.Edwards founded the Bourn Hall Clinic in Cambridge shire, which nowtreats more than 900 women a year. Each year, more than 30,000women in Britain now undergo IVF and 11,000 babies are born as aresult of the treatment.

But his work attracted widespread criticism from some scientistsand the Catholic Church who said it was “unethical andimmoral”.

Martin Johnson, professor of reproductive (生殖的) sciences at theUniversity of Cambridge, said the award was “l(fā)ong overdue”. Hesaid: “We couldn’t understand why the Nobel has come so late but heis delighted—this is the cherry on the cake for him.”

Professor Edwards was too ill to give interviews but a statementreleased by his family said he was “thrilled and delighted”.

32. What is Robert Edwards’ contribution to science?

A. Challenging a disease which stops human having a baby.

B. Seeing the wonder of the first tube baby growing.

C. Enabling millions of couples to live a better life.

D. Helping couples with infertility to have tube babies.

33. What does the underlined word “afflicting” (Paragraph 4)most probably refer to?

A. Troubling. B. Developing.

C. Improving. D. Confusing.

34. It can be inferred from Paragraph 8 and Paragraph 9 that.

A. some people envied Professor Edwards for his beingawarded

B. different opinions were voiced on Professor Edwards’finding

C. Professor Edwards deserved the prize for his breakthrough

D. the prize was late because the finding was first consideredimmoral

35. What might be the best title for the passage?

A. Life Stories of Robert Edwards

B. Preparations for Having a Baby

C. Nobel Prize for IVF Expert Edwards

D. Treatment of Infertility in a Lab

How table manners became polite

Do you remember being told to keep your elbows off the tablewhen you are eating? 36 Back then, children weren’t evenallowed to sit at the table. They stood behind the adults and atewhatever the adults gave them.

Later, children were allowed to sit at the table, but theycouldn’t speak unless an adult spoke to them. They couldn’t ask fora dish, either. 37 It was also considered rude to look atsomeone else who was eating.

Table manners are even older than tables. About 9,000 years ago, people cooked soups in pots. When they ate, they dipped spoons, made of wood or bone, into the cooking pot. Sometimes people didn’tuse spoons. They just picked out pieces of meat with theirfingers.

38 Some cultures still follow this custom. For example, some people use only the first three fingers of the right hand. Innorthern India, some diners use only the fingertips of the righthand, but in the south, it is acceptable to use both hands.

Table manners became quite important in Europe in the 1100s.That was when people developed the idea of courtesy (禮貌). Soonrules about eating began appearing in written texts.

In the 1300s, the Renaissance arrived in Europe. So did thefork. As new table customs developed, people began to eat fromplates, and everyone had their own cup. People couldn’t throw boneson the floor anymore. 39

Nowadays people use many simple table manners without thinking. But if you’re a guest, and you’re not sure what to do, just do whatthe host does and follow the basic principle of table manners:40

A. It was more polite to leave them on the plate.

B. Eating with the fingers has never disappeared.

C. They had to wait until an adult offered it to them.

D. There are many other rules, especially at formal parties.

E. Be thoughtful of others, and make dining as pleasant aspossible.

F. The rules were meant to make the dining experience pleasantand tidy.

G. Well if you do, be grateful you weren’t a child of America’searly settlers.

作文:

Dear Headmaster,

We have been asked about our opinions on opening iPadclassrooms. I am in favor of this plan for the followingreasons.

To begin with, everyone learns differently. Students cancustomize their iPad with materials that fit their level andlearning style, and thus tailor it to different needs. Moreover, when connected to the internet, students can interact with teachersand classmates about what they learn more conveniently. For thesake of environmental protection, opening iPad classrooms is a goodway to save trees that we have been cutting down for paper. Mostimportantly, I believe students will develop their interest in thesubjects by enjoying a new way of learning.

I hope you would take my ideas into consideration and we lookforward to attending an iPad class.

Yours

Li Hua
