Researchers at Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) carried out an experiment. The experiment lasted a month. Scientists managed to discover that tomato plants grew up 2 inches taller when women gardeners talked to them instead of male.
The voice of Sarah Darwin was the most “inspiring” for plants among the voices of nine other gardeners when reading a passage from On the Origin of Species. The great-great daughter of the famous botanist Charles Darwin found that her plant grew about two inches taller than the plant of the best male gardener.
Colin Crosbie, Garden manager at RHS, said that the findings cannot yet be explained. He supposes that women have a greater range of pitch (音高) and tone which might have a certain effect on the sound waves that reach the plant. "Sound waves are an environmental effect just like rain or light," said Mr. Crosbie.
The study began in April at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey. Scientists started with open auditions (試音) for the people who were asked to record passages from John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids, Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream and Darwin's On the Origin of Species.
Afterwards researchers selected a number of different voices and played them to 10 tomato plants during a period of a month. Each plant had headphones connected to it. Through the headphones the sound waves could hit the plants. It was discovered that plants that "listened" to female voices in average grew taller by an inch in comparison to plants that heard male voices.
Miss Darwin said: “I think it is an honor to have a voice that can make tomatoes grow, and especially fitting because for many years I’ve been studying wild tomatoes from the Galapagos Islands at the Natural History Museum in London.”
1. The experiment suggests that _______.
A. a male’s voice has little effects on plant
B. sound can make plants grow faster
C. a female’s voice makes plants grow faster than a male’s
D. noise can prevent plants growing
2. From the passage we can infer that Sarah Darwin is _______.
A. a gardener B. a botanist C. a park manager D. an environmentalist
3. The passage mainly talks about _______.
A. Miss Darwin’s study on the Galapagos Islands B. an interesting tomato experiment
C. the book On the Origin of Species D. voice influence on plant growing
In case of an accident or a fire on a school bus, this is what you will need to know. Don’t worry; these rules will be practiced twice a year at your school.
●The driver will review with you all the safety rules of riding a school bus and explain to you where all the danger zones are around a school bus. Pay attention and obey your driver and you will always be safe.
●The driver will show you all the emergency equipment, like the fire extinguisher (滅火器), the axe, the first aid kit and the 2 way radio. Pay attention and try to remember where they are and how they are used.

●Now the driver will show you how to evacuate the bus from the back door in case of an emergency.
STAY CALM, DO NOT PUSH AND HAVE YOUR HANDS FREE.

●Once you are out of the bus, you will go to the get-together area, and wait for your driver.
●The driver will then help you if you are hurt until 911 arrives.

Lines play a important role in traditional Chinese painting, and the changes in lines are mainly determined by the method of using the brush.
Therefore, in learning the basic techniques of traditional Chinese painting, you should first grasp the basic techniques of using the brush. For instance, you need to pay attention to how to hold the brush, start a stroke (筆畫), continue it and come to an end, how to move the brush quickly or slowly, lightly or heavily, and how to vary lifting or pressing the brush. If you make it, your lines will be vivid and forceful, and you will bring out the spiritual characteristics of the object you’re drawing.
The use of the brush in freehand painting allows for a full range of changes.
You should paint flexibly and freely. Do not mechanically copy strokes, or your painting will be meaningless. How can you make your painting natural? To begin with, you should carefully observe physical and spiritual changes in objects and the state of mind you intend to present, then you have a clear understanding of what you wish to paint. When you paint in this way, your painting will be interesting and lifelike.
There is a saying in Chinese about having a picture of bamboo in your mind. It means that before an artist paints, he must carefully observe the growth and shape of the bamboo and keep them clearly in mind. Then in painting the bamboo will be finished at one go.
In freehand painting you should pay attention to how you hold the brush. Do not move your fingers only. It is important to coordinate them with your wrist, elbow and shoulder. You should practice until you are able to paint with your wrist suspended. Thus you may paint with ease the longest line, the roundest circle, and bamboo poles several feet long.
8. According to the writer, we can learn that ________.
A. bamboo is the hardest object to paint
B. traditional Chinese painting is an art of lines
C. using brush is more important than observation
D. it’s the most difficult to learn traditional Chinese painting
9. By quoting “having a picture of bamboo in your mind”, the writer wants to tell us ________.
A. practice makes perfect B. the effect of practice
C. seeing is believing D. the importance of observation
10. The underlined word “coordinate” in the last paragraph means _______.
A. to join together two or more things B. to get along with
C. to organize the different parts of an activity D. to change something slightly
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Brush Techniques B. How to Paint the Bamboo
C. Brush and Painting D. Characteristics of Chinese painting
Restaurants in Europe, the United States and Japan are testing technology to let diners order their food directly from a screen at their table instead of depending on a fellow human being to note their choices -- sometimes rudely or incorrectly.
Besides cutting costs, companies that sell the “e-menu” argue the approach has a novelty (新奇的)value that can attract younger customers, and increase income as beautiful pictures of food attract diners to order more.
In Israel, privately-owned start-up Conceptic has already installed e-Menu technology in sushi bars, pubs and family restaurants. The system is based on touch-screens already used in self-service canteens or for ticketing in airports and cinemas.
“It’s about impulse-buying(即興購買),” said Adi Chitayat, Conceptic’s chief executive. “If a person starts looking at pictures of chocolate cake, the chances are that he’ll order it.” The firm has also supplied its systems to restaurants in France, South Africa and Belgium.
Frame, a popular sushi restaurant in Tel Aviv which has installed the system, reported sales on tables with the e-Menu have increased by about 11 percent. Customers often call ahead to book spots equipped with the screens.
At one of the e-Menu tables, information technology worker Gil Uriel and his young family were enthusiastic as they checked out pictures of the dishes on offer and discussed which desserts to order.
“It’s more visual(直觀的),” said Uriel. “We can still choose, we can still argue -- but it’s much easier when you can all see it.”
12. According to the passage, what are the advantages of the e-Menu technology system?
①saving costs ② attracting young people ③ saving time
④ attract diners to order more food
A. ①③④ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ①②③④
13. Frame has increased its sales by about 11% because _________.
A. its service is the best in Tel Aviv B. it has used the e-Menu system
C. its sushi is very delicious in Tel Aviv D. The people In Tel Aviv like eating sushi
14. Who might be most interested in this e-Menu technology system?
A. managers B. engineers C. customers D. officials
15. Which would probably be the best title for the passage?
A. Technology in restaurants B. Modern restaurants
C. Great changes in restaurants D. Restaurants try e-menus

16. D??瞻浊懊娴摹?/span>how important he is”與空后的句子在意義上構成了讓步關系。

2. B。根據(jù)短文最后一句,再結合“The great-great daughter of the famous botanist Charles Darwin found that…”
4. A 根據(jù)“…and explain to you where all the danger zones are around a school bus”可知答案為A。由“why the driver will teach you how to use the 2 way radio”可排除C。
6. C。由“You may need to help the driver if she is injured”和“The driver will have assigned two students to stand at the back door to help you”C項正確。
13. B。根據(jù)第五段中的“…with the e-Menu have increased by about 11 percent.”
III.
1. How to succeed in high school./How to get your grades back on track.
2. difficult subjects; increased homework; higher expectations.
3. Sit at a table or desk where you can write neatly and where you will stay alert.

2.where→which/that??
3.在you后加are??
4.an→the。
5. √。
6.hand→hands。 shake hands with sb意思是“握手”。
7.another→other??
8.and→or。
9.was→is??
10.before→after。
One possible version
Is a Training Class Necessary?
At present, more and more high school students are going to all kinds of training classes at the weekend. Last week, the students in Class 2, Grade One held a discussion. There are two main opinions about it.
Some students think it necessary. They hold the opinion that it’s more effective to study with a teacher than by oneself at home and that it can strengthen what is learned in class. Others think it is a waste of time and money. For one thing, students can easily form the habit of dependence, which is bad for them. For another, students need to relax themselves in their spare time, which can help improve the studying efficiency.
In my opinion, whether a training class is needed all depends. If you are really very weak in certain subject, maybe it’s OK for you. But be sure to choose a good and suitable class, otherwise it would really be a waste of time and money.
